City Hall Notes Building an Ice Surface Not as Easy as It Looks
City readers learn how Cedar Rapids builds and maintains winter skating rinks from Ken Sullivan. Maintenance crews flood and freeze surfaces, regulate temps below 28 degrees, and run a morning schedule to ready 13 artificial and natural rinks including Noelridge Manhattan and Jones park lagoons. Supervisors manage rink cleanliness and enforce rules to ensure safe, ongoing winter sports amid fluctuating weather. 49142 skaters used facilities in 52 days last season, with a speed skating program at Manhattan rink.
