Paola Kansas United Press reports that Robert Big Boy Brady a noted southwestern desperado and jail breaker was shot to death by a deputy sheriff who surprised Brady and three companions in a cornfield. The three captured convicts Fred Cody Tommy McMahon and Benjamin Young identified Brady by photographs and confirmed the fatal gun duel. Brady who led a girl from Lansing penitentiary last Friday was serving a life sentence under the habitual criminal law. this marked his third prison escape, previously from Oklahoma and Lansing prisons.
Four fugitives from Lansing prison battled lawmen in a cornfield near Tucumcari New Mexico. Brady was killed after firing on Undersheriff Lininger and deputy Schlotman. Three other convicts surrendered as guards and National Guardsmen closed in. Claude Newton alias McArthur was captured in Kansas City with others at large in Oklahoma. Two guards were suspended amid renewed penitentiary surveillance.
