Terrace Hill: Iowa’s Palace of the Prairie’s 155th Housewarming
David V. Wendell recounts the 1869 Des Moines mansion built by Benjamin F. Allen and Arathusa Allen. The Second Empire palace by architect William Boyington featured lavish New York furniture, costly marble mantels, and a Chicago caterer. After fortunes waned in 1873, the Hubbell era, then state ownership in 1972, Terrace Hill remains Iowa’s governor residence emblem.
