Iowa Senate Allows Early Retirement Plan For State Workers
The Senate voted 41 7 to offer eligible state employees with at least 10 years service up to 25000 per year of service plus five years health coverage, paid in five installments starting 2010. About 1000 of 6600 workers aged 55 plus may participate, with estimated first year savings near 57.4 million and total savings to 2015 of 189.4 million, amid budget pressures and a hiring freeze. Governor Culver backs the plan as a cost saving move while some Republicans doubt the projected gains. Eligibility requires application by April 15 and departure by May 28.
