Norland urges sales tax break to lure GM Saturn plant
House Majority Leader Lowell Norland says Iowa should remove the 4 percent sales tax on machinery and equipment to attract GM's Saturn assembly plant to Cedar Rapids or another city. He notes a 6,000 jobs payoff and says cities should offer aggressive incentives plus a new job training program backed by Kirkwood Community College. Senate leaders echo support if it brings the plant to Iowa.

Nature Center urged to seek funds from Linn supervisors
Indian Creek Nature Center sought 11500 for next fiscal year from the Linn County Conservation Board but received only a recommendation to pursue a grant from the Linn County Board of Supervisors. The board praised the naturalist program but noted grants to private groups set a precedent and should come from supervisors. Rich Patterson and Mike Newmeister said Cedar Rapids plans to allocate the same 11500 next year, up from 6500, in addition to the center's 11000 contract with the board. The meeting also re-elected David Lyon president Jim Burke vice president and Linda Sutherland secretary.
