Archers from Anamosa edge Dubuque Boys Club in 13-3 win

Jenny Irvine and Heather Paustian of Anamosa lead a two-squad archery meet at Jack's Archery Fairview. Dallas Paustian records scores as 16 archers per team shoot 60 arrows total. The Anamosa squad beat the Dubuque Boys Club by 13 to 3 last Saturday.

Ice fisherees open at Rodgers Lake near Vinton

The Red Cedar Chapter Izaak Walton League hosts the Benton's first ice fisheree of the season at Rodgers Lake four miles northwest of Vinton. It runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. rain or shine with ice up to 10 inches. Top prizes include a Minnesota vacation and various merchandise. tickets cost $1.

Fly anglers return to Cedar Rapids for annual convention

The Hawkeye Fly Fishing Association will hold its ninth annual convention at the Holiday Inn in Cedar Rapids on February 19 and 20. Fly tying demonstrations seminars films and a banquet will be held with speakers Mike Lawson and Bob Jacklin. Reservations call Don Davis in Marion or Ed Powell in Ames.

Outdoor safety class offered by U S Power Squadron in Solon

The U S Power Squadron will run a boat handling and safety course starting February 1 at the Solon State Bank in Solon. Sessions run 7 30 to 9 30 p m for 10 weeks with a material fee of 5 dollars. Call 393 1310 for details. The Iowa Conservation Commission plans to stock wild turkeys in Palisades Kepler State Park area later this month if weather allows. Biologist Bob Dolan notes turkeys are present nearby and a snow cover will be needed to net birds for relocation to Linn County. Wildlife biologist Jim Ripple says the Cresco Cardinal Marsh in Winneshiek County will be drained in stages to encourage plant growth. Snow count to measure Iowa whitetail deer population

Wildlife biologists plan to fly low over eastern central Iowa after two snows to count deer. Bob Dolan explains the first snow concentrates deer and the second covers their beds, revealing beds as brown patches from the air. They will survey 10 percent of timber per county to estimate statewide numbers for management programs. The fixed wing planes will fly roughly 400 to 500 feet, mostly around midday to minimize shadows.
