Arts Council Under Way By Allen Nelson Gazette Staff Writer
The Iowa State Arts Council, created in February 1966 by Governor Hughes, began with a $25,000 federal grant and no state funds. David Leonetti, named executive director, leads a 15 member nonpartisan panel to survey cultural resources, plan a permanent state agency, and advise on funding options including federal and education act avenues. The council aims to assist touring performances, provide technical aid, and publish resources while inviting organizations to contact the statehouse. Also, Riverside Recreation Center begins adult painting classes January 30 and February 1, and Cedar Rapids artist Richard Pinney will exhibit at the University Club in Iowa City through February 5.
