Court rules married pupils cannot be barred from sports
District Judge Wood in Waterloo ruled the Waterloo school board overstepped its powers by barring Ronald Green, 17, from basketball due to a rule against married students playing. He said marriage alone cannot justify denying participation if grades and conduct are proper, noting extracurriculars carry value and may affect scholarships and college opportunities. The decision aims to guide boards until appealed to the supreme court.

Freeze Out Promising New Candidates Warm Seat Policy
ASHINGTON On Jan. 4 in the exclusive Recess club in Manhattan well heeled Republican businessmen heard an appeal for campaign funds from Steven Derounian a Goldwaterite Republican congressman from Long Island swept out in the 1964 election now trying to get his old job back. In his pitch for funds Derounian had one solid piece of ammunition a personal letter from Rep Melvin Laird of Wisconsin chairman of the house Republican conference Lairds letter pointed out the conference a year earlier had quietly established a warm seat policy for defeated congressmen The conference decided that any Republican ex congressman returning to his job would have automatic first call on any vacancy on his old committee. The policy could allow Derounian to return to the Ways and Means Committee boosting New York money interests. The fat cats at the Recess club were impressed. supporters could help him avoid challenging nominees. The move conflicts with hopes of younger Republicans and could jeopardize Derounians rivals and favor his re election prospects. He faces Archie Gillies and William Casey as opponents in a district where two ex candidates are disadvantaged by the warm seat rule. Derounian has kept his Goldwater stance since 1964 and recently refused to take a position on formally censuring the John Birch Society.
