Farming couple balances labor limits and trips with steady plans

George and Zelda Pearson manage a mixed farm with four children and part time help averaging about $100 monthly last year. They emphasize soil conservation, contouring, heavy liquid fertilizer use, and careful budgeting to pay land and support family activities including 4-H, scouting, church, and farm groups. Despite hail reducing home corn yields, they report over 100 bushels per acre at other sites and value frugal maintenance like overhauling a tractor for $300 rather than buying new.
