Alcide Benoit, a paroled convict and marijuana addict, was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labor in Jackson penitentiary for the kidnap murder of State Trooper Richards F. Hammond. Circuit Judge G Arthur Rathbun handed down the sentence after Benoit, once claiming innocence, pleaded guilty following Michigan's largest manhunt.
Detroit police said two Benoit gang members Joseph Rocco aged 28 and Charles Gyori aged 21 confessed to robberies and kidnappings in Detroit and Flint. They and accomplice Mike Del Berto alias John Smith are parolees from Ionia reform school. Del Berto pled guilty and faces a life sentence as habitual offender.
City crowds buzzed despite official denial as Katharine Hepburn and Howard Hughes were linked to a possible marriage. County Clerk Flynn signaled no license yet and Hughes was seen in town while the couple remained unavailable.
Henry M. Cop aged 59 of 1421 K street SW was hit at the First avenue and Second street E crosswalk at 9 p.m. He suffered a fracture to his left leg below the knee and was taken to Mercy Hospital. The driver, W. J. Carney aged 52 of 727 First street SW, said he stopped at the signal and did not see Cop crossing after light changed.
In Williamston Michigan two masked men robbed the Crossman and Williams State Bank just after noon Friday and fled with roughly seven thousand dollars in currency. No injuries reported and suspects fled the scene.
Prof. Ernest G. Schroeder becomes director of the division of physical education at the University of Iowa and Glen D. Devine is named assistant in charge of intercollegiate athletics for at least one year. The move, approved by President Gilmore and the state board committee, sets the stage for selecting a head football coach. Devine, a 1922 Iowa graduate and former Hawkeye star, will lead intercollegiate competition with special direction and leadership.
