28 Marines Lost in Inchon Harbor Collision
INCHON Korea Twenty eight U S marines were drowned or missing after their landing craft overturned when struck by a Japanese manned transport carrying Chinese prisoners. Six bodies were recovered by Thursday evening, with 22 others listed as missing. Survivors, including Pfc Thomas Malone and Pfc Robert Neal, described being tossed into icy water with heavy packs and rescued by a Korean sampan and small boats. The crash involved a larger LST troopship manned by Japanese crew and carrying Chinese POWs bound for Formosa. Names of the dead were withheld pending family notification.
