Gen George C Marshall returning from China to become secretary of state said he cannot be drafted for any political office. He stated he is explicit to end any discussion of his name in politics and dismissed 1948 presidential speculation.
Gen George C Marshall took the oath as secretary of state in the presence of President Truman and pledged I ll do my best.
General Marshall stated that now is as good a time as any to end speculation about his future plans. He said the office of secretary of state is non political and he will govern himself accordingly, denying any candidacy for political office and rejecting the idea of being drafted. He declined to comment on international affairs or whether he will remain army chief of staff.
A refinery pipeline leak in East Chicago Indiana sent 10 000 residents fleeing danger as crews battled to remove three foot deep gasoline from a main near the Shell refinery. Police and fire officials ordered households to extinguish pilot lights and observe safety precautions until the threat subsides.
Andrew J. Volstead, 87, a former Minnesota congressman and author of the Volstead prohibition act, died in Granite Falls after years of poor health. A native of Minnesota, he served as mayor and county attorney before entering Congress in 1903, where he sought to repeal broad wartime powers and champion probate work.

In Rotan Texas two Army flyers were killed and three injured when a B 29 crash landed Monday. Three others aboard escaped injury. Lt E R Henningson from DeWitt Iowa was among those injured.
DETROIT reports dealers confirm price hikes on nearly all General Motors 1947 passenger cars effective January 16. Chevrolet unchanged as 1947 models finalize. Increases include Buick convertible coupe up 150, Pontiac models up 17 to 193, Cadillac up 150, Oldsmobile up to 134, with GM president silent pending an official statement.
The United States rejected Russia's bid to extradite Kyrill Alekseev, a former Soviet trade official who criticized dictatorship. Washington said the denial rests on the absence of an extradition treaty between the two nations.

Iowa City a verdict of not murder was returned by a jury after a 20 minute deliberation. The defendant, Patton, faced a murder charge in the November 24 fight at his home that left Ernest R. Brown of Kansas City dead. The rapid verdict followed closing arguments by Clair E. Hamilton and prosecutors, with Judge Harold D. Evans presiding.
Under-Secretary Kenneth C. Royall warned a Senate subcommittee that portal pay claims on cost-plus fixed-fee World War II contracts threaten the U S with about a half billion dollars in liability. He cited $40 to $45 billion in such contracts from 1941 to 1946 and $200 million in portal claims already asserted.

Siegfried Kabus former storm troop leader was sentenced Tuesday to hang after his conviction as ringleader of a bombing. The trial in Stuttgart Germany concluded with the ruling amid wartime security.
In Atlanta a crowd of about two thousand students marched to the state capitol demanding Talmadge resign. An effigy of Talmadge in red suspenders hung from a statue while protesters urged action and criticized a white supremacist political past. Talmadge proposed a vote in a Democratic primary if Lt. Gov. Thompson also resigns, while lawmakers debated next steps and adjournment as the governor offered to meet any gubernatorial candidate.
