Lawmaker seeks Legislature control over Braille school decision
Benton County lawmaker accuses the Board of Regents of heading toward closing the Iowa Braille and Light Saving School in Vinton. She says a coordinating council must report back before any decision, likely after May, and pushes for legislative involvement to override regents’ plans amid concerns over budget and jobs.

Iowa legislature eyes 6 percent school budget growth for 2007 08
In Des Moines the Senate signals quick approval of a 6 percent allowable growth, a $150 million rise for the 2007 08 school year, with a final figure likely to be negotiated between chambers. Republicans fear the higher amount after last year’s 4 percent increase. House leaders urge community meetings Feb 17 to discuss avian flu planning across the state. A separate proposal by Sen John Putney would raise pickup registration fees to weight and value based on a long standing exemption benefiting farmers by reallocating funds to road use and an E85 ethanol pump fund.
