Harkin Opens as Agriculture Committee Chair
Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa chaired a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing as the new chair, in a 50 50 chamber with Vice President Gore having broken the tie. He noted he would likely have the post briefly before Republican Dick Cheney takes over. He also oversaw a confirmation hearing for Ann Veneman the first woman nominated for the post.
