Inherited dense LDL raises heart attack risk nationwide

NEW ORLEANS AP An estimated one in three Americans may inherit a dense LDL cholesterol form linked to triple the risk of heart disease. Dr Ronald Krauss of UC Berkeley says a single dominant gene may regulate dense LDL production, marking a genetic state that elevates risk amid obesity, high fat intake, inactivity, and hypertension. Dense LDL can be measured by blood test and could serve as a marker for susceptibility. In studies with 2000 individuals and two groups of heart attack victims, dense LDL correlated with a threefold risk increase for men and women.
