A 15 year old youth stole a starter's pistol from Kmart at 180 Collins road NE Sunday. Store employees chased him to Lindale Plaza where he turned and pointed the pistol at them. He was stopped by a customer in Killian's store. charged with assault and battery and pointing a gun. He was jailed and released to his parents.
A Cedar Rapids man, Earl DeNio, 53, of 800 Thirty sixth street NE, was admitted in good condition to Mercy hospital detoxification center after he rammed his head into a Linn County jail wall. Sheriff Grant said he battered the wall in a running strike, requiring 32 stitches. DeNio was taken to jail on an intoxication charge and moved to detoxification on Sunday.
A Cedar Rapids restaurant owner surprised two burglars inside Jerry's Back Room West early Sunday. Two men fled after breaking a plate glass window. Philip H. Fellers 21 Marion and Joseph Randels 20 Des Moines jailed on $10,000 bond each for breaking and entering. Kenneth Koons 29 Des Moines jailed on $10,000 bond as lookout. The prior day a break-in netted $1,366 and whiskey valued at $91.
The Virginia supreme court revoked the law license of former presidential adviser Charles Colson. The court affirmed actions by the Virginia Bar Association after Colson was sentenced for violating Daniel Ellsberg's rights following the Pentagon Papers publication. He admitted directing a smear campaign alleged to be ordered by former President Richard Nixon.
A Linn district court jury ruled for Iowa Manufacturing Co and James W Bell Co in a suit by Winterset man James A Bindell claiming more than 1 million dollars. Bindell, 19, alleged negligence in design and sale of a stone crushing machine after an Earlham accident on March 3 1969. He said a shaft protruding nine inches from the conveyor top caused his injuries.
Governor Ray criticized gaps in the current Oklahoma land law and urged corrections to bar foreign ownership by silent partners. He suggested truth-in-filing and cross-checks among county recorders to enforce a 640-acre cap, with possible penalties under expropriation or escheat laws. He noted interest from a Massachusetts firm and referenced Iowa’s farm ownership approach while supporting corporate tech in farming but not replacement of actual farmers.

In Washington the Senate Democrats vote 45 to 7 to create a Watergate style select committee to probe alleged illegal intelligence gathering by the CIA FBI and other agencies. The panel would have seven to eleven members with a Sept 1 reporting deadline. Sen Stennis objects to subjecting the CIA to investigation. Sen Pastore supports in depth investigation to correct abuse and restore trust.
Salvation Army employee William E. Sarver walked into a warehouse behind Salvation Army headquarters at 2920 First Avenue NE Saturday at 6 30 p m and surprised a burglar going through his office desk. The burglar leveled a .22 rifle, they wrestled, and the suspect escaped. Sarver suffered facial cuts and a nose injury, treated at St Luke s hospital then released. Police described the burglar as a white male about 50, 5 7, 148 pounds with brown hair.
Archbishop Makarios, leading Greek Cypriots outside the American Embassy information center, urged restraint as troops fired into the air. He walked the crowd to the Greek Embassy, spoke to them for about 30 minutes, and helped disperse the mob without violence.
