Iowa backyard flocks urged to follow strict bird flu precautions
The bird flu outbreak has infected 63 Iowa flocks since March 2022 with two private flocks in Clinton and Monona counties among recent detections. Authorities emphasize strict coop hygiene, boot and coat disinfection, restricted flock visits, and secure feeds to prevent spread, alongside culling infected flocks. Local advisories note humans have few mild symptoms but a Louisiana case shows possible mortality. Cedar Rapids requires permits, female-only birds, fenced coops, minimum space, rear-yard placement, leg bands, annual renewals, and a required urban chicken course.
