Gov. Reynolds proposes amending a bill to limit area education agencies to special education services only. The change comes after a week of feedback from parents and educators. Districts could keep funds and direct them to AEAs or private providers for required services. AEAs would focus solely on special education under the plan.
Beth Goetz, who has led the University of Iowa athletics department as interim director since August 1 after Gary Barta retired, is named the university’s permanent athletics director. The UI cites a national search and praise for her leadership as reasons for the decision. Goetz’s tenure is expected to bring major future decisions.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources finds 2023 was among the warmest years and driest in 151 years, with just over 2 feet of precipitation. The state finished about 9 inches below normal, drought covered most areas from June, and Eastern Iowa faced exceptional drought in Sept and Oct. Northwestern Iowa fared best while southern Iowa hovered under watch or warning levels.
A Dallas based company Reserve Development bought the former Sears at Lindale Mall Cedar Rapids. Redevelopment aims to attract national retailers though price and plans weren’t disclosed. The 129000 square foot store at 4600 First Ave NE closed in July 2018.
