Casino foundation to aid Washington chamber after fire
The Washington County Riverboat Foundation voted to help the Washington Chamber of Commerce after a Sunday fire destroyed its office and much of its records and equipment. The foundation, funded by Riverside Casino and Golf Resort, will determine aid after totaling losses and replacement costs before its Feb. 20 meeting. Fire investigators attributed the blaze to a cutting torch used by owner Lynn Beachy. Officers were re elected: Tim Putney president, Patty Keller vice president, Ronald C Slechta secretary, Ted Crain treasurer, with two board seats open for new appointees.

Man receives maximum two years for assault on dog walker
Harold Sweet testified about lasting eye damage from the June Ossian beating. Derek Collier, 26, was sentenced to two years for assault causing serious injury and one year for assault causing bodily injury, to be served consecutively, with medical bills to be paid. Shawn Walker faces sentencing January 25.

Probe finds no fault with Independence officer
Independence officials released the results of an internal probe into Officer David Winger, finding no evidence of unprofessional or improper conduct. City Attorney Sarah Dooley-Rothman said the inquiry, prompted by complaints and a Sept. 11 rally, concluded the officer acted within policy as Chief Doug Rasmussen reviewed and counseled him where needed.
