Fingerprint system to stay in Cedar Rapids

Cedar Rapids Police Department will keep its Automated Fingerprint Identification System AFIS after a Des Moines committee vote. Acting Chief William Byrne and Public Safety Commissioner J D Smith presented to the AFIS committee which decided to keep the terminal in Cedar Rapids. Linn County Sheriff Dennis Blome and other officers noted the move saves man hours and aids crime solving as the unit has already helped identify nine suspects across five area agencies. The AFIS system rapidly searches about 2000 fingerprints per second and will be implemented in five Iowa cities Des Moines Waterloo Davenport Sioux City and Cedar Rapids with current terminals in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids.
