Prairie high star Brase, a 5-11 senior guard, repeats as Gazette Prep Back of the Week after scoring 23 in a 62-57 win over Marion and 14 in a 69-58 victory at Linn-Mar. He leads area scorers with a 21.3 average, 45% FG, 74% FT, and 69 rebounds.
Cedar Rapids lightweight TeBockhorst meets Cal Spencer of Marshalltown in a 195 pound heavyweight clash on the January 24 amateur boxing card in Cedar Rapids. Spencer was runner-up at the Iowa Golden Gloves. About 15 bouts are planned with open novice and junior divisions at the K of C Hall starting 1 p.m. Sunday January 24.
A reunion of J-Hawk lettermen alumni in all sports will be held at halftime and after the Clinton Jefferson basketball game Friday night. All lettermen are invited to attend.
The Pittsburgh Condors expected to announce the firing of General Manager Marty Blake at 11 a.m. today. Blake, hired seven months ago on a $50,000 five year contract, is to be replaced by Mark Einstein who says he was offered Blake's job when the club was purchased last May.
The city of Shreveport gained a new Texas league franchise after losing its 1970 site. The owner of the El Paso Sun Kings announced he would move the franchise to Shreveport for the 1971 season.
The report describes Bill Stewart of 240 Twelfth Street NW Cedar Rapids perched on a sled with feet off the cold ice using an old box to fish at Hannen Lake.
Dick Knowles hits a 15 foot shot with four seconds left to lift Happitime to a 63 61 victory over Red Lion Lounge and claim the first half title at Central YMCA. Knowles scores 17 for Happitime (5 0) while Jim Lockett paces Red Lion with 20 as other Monday results include Morris Plan 55 40 over Thursday Optimists and Davis Jones Insurance 54 35 over Cedar Rapids Jaycees.
Iowa City West defeated Prairie in two junior high B basketball games. The seventh grade team lost 44 to 13 and the eighth graders fell 45 to 21.
MILWAUKEE AP Coach Al McGuire of Marquette complains that TV timeouts disrupt college basketball. After a 65-53 victory over New Mexico State he says commercials break game continuity, calling broadcasters to schedule breaks with normal timeouts. He notes he called one or two timeouts himself and suspects opponents did too for TV.
National Association results show Kentucky defeating Virginia 124 114. Other games list New York Baltimore Philadelphia Cincinnati Boston Atlanta Buffalo Cleveland Milwaukee Los Angeles Detroit San Francisco San Diego Chicago Seattle Portland and Phoenix with varied scores. The schedule includes multiple teams across Eastern Atlantic Central Western Midwest Pacific regions with several high totals and losses.
In Los Angeles AP report, basketball star Spencer Haywood wins a preliminary injunction allowing him to continue with the Seattle SuperSonics while antitrust suit against the NBA proceeds. A March 2 trial date is set. NBA argues jurisdiction and contractual issues regarding college status.
TIFFIN- Norway Urbana and Clear Creek posted opening round victories here Monday night in the Benton conference girls' basketball tournament. The three teams advance to Thursday's semi finals, with Urbana drawing a bye and automatically making Saturday's finals. Julie Kimm scored 34 points in pacing Norway to a 51-36 victory over DR-M. Cathy Conner had 20 for DR-M. Urbana tipped Shellsburg, 41-39. Deb Donahue had 15 for the winners, and Gail Booth 20 for Shellsburg. Patty Stockman's 23 points led Clear Creek to a 65-36 victory over Belle Plaine in the night's final game. Deb Croft had 15 for Belle Plaine.
