About 12,000 paper book covers with Americanism themes were distributed Thursday in Cedar Rapids high schools by the Chamber of Commerce Young Men's Bureau. Donated by the Institute for American Democracy, the covers wrap textbooks for Immaculate Conception St. Patrick's Mt. Mercy St. Wenceslaus Franklin Roosevelt McKinley and Wilson high schools. The institute sent covers to Cedar Rapids free of charge to test their effectiveness in a midwestern city with Philadelphia also a test site. The front carries a story urging students to oppose religious or racial discrimination and report such talk. Homer Stone, Henry? Stone, YMB Americanism committee chairman, oversaw distribution with Jack Hatt and Herman Schultz.
