Obesity pathway insight from US Mayo Yale CT NYU study
Researchers from the University of Iowa in collaboration with Mayo Clinic and others report in Cell Metabolism on how an ATP sensitive potassium channel in heart and skeletal muscle regulates energy use. Disrupting the channel increased resting energy burn and produced lean mice on high fat diets, but reduced endurance. The work suggests muscle specific channel targeting could help obesity management without harming heart or muscle function. Authors include Leonid Zingman and Alexey Alekseev with contributors from Yale CT NYU and Mayo. Support came from NIH and other grants.
