Police found two escapees, Clayton Douglas Smith and a 14 year old, hiding inside a wall behind a moved dresser at 940 L St SW. Smith faces an escape warrant from Newton. the juvenile also charged. Residents Stella Gaal, Gary Clemons, and Rose Smestad were charged with interference with official acts.

Mercy Hospital seeks $23 million IRB for expansion in Iowa City
Iowa City Mayor Mary Neuhauser says no church state conflict if the City Council approves Mercy Hospital's $23 million industrial revenue bond IRB. The Catholic hospital plans renovate outpatient surgery obstetrics newborn units and build new ER and diagnostic facilities plus a two story parking ramp. If approved the bond would not cost the city and could lower financing costs by three to four points. Mercy Hospital is non profit so IRS limits do not apply. Council support is expected with planning staff review underway for council action in early February.

Des Moines Woman Faces Murder Trial in Des Moines Killing
Debra Oliver, 20, of Des Moines goes on trial in Pottawattamie County for the murder of Charles Tad Kimsey Jr. Kimsey was found April 3 stabbed and strangled in his Des Moines apartment. Oliver's brother Terrance, 21, was convicted previously of aiding and abetting a murder during robbery and faces a life sentence. Oliver's trial was moved to Council Bluffs due to pre trial publicity.
