University of Illinois dairy researchers report gestation length is hereditary and can be shortened by selective breeding. Studies of over 2000 gestations show calves influence birth timing more than cows, with 50 percent of females bred to 5 percent of males from shortest pregnancies reducing gestation by 3.2 days in one generation.
