Iowa Education Director Pay Hike Tied to Appointment Powers

A Senate bill to raise the Iowa education director salary to 65 000 to 105 000 also shifts appointment power from the governor to the state Board of Education. Gov. Branstad opposes the linked provisions, fearing it voids prior compromises from the 1978 state government reorganization. Board member Lepley would require Branstad to cede appointment authority to honor a 72 000 salary and 8 000 annuity agreement, risking a veto if kept separate.
