Silent Statehouse protest urges a farm foreclosure moratorium
About 350 Iowa farmers gathered in the House gallery during Gov. Branstad’s Condition of the State to demand an immediate farm foreclosure moratorium. Dean Goldsmith of Corning, bankrupt after three hard years, urged action as others warned of collapsing land values and tax bases. Some legislators expressed cautious openness, while Branstad offered no commitment, noting national action may be needed.
