He was linked to a July indictment tied to a March 11 Hy Vee theft at 1556 First Ave NE where $413.05 worth of cigarets canned goods and meats were found in a Rossey truck. Richard F Stevens 23 of 515 Sixth Ave SE received a ten year sentence for breaking and entering and placed on probation after pleading guilty in a Center Point rural residence theft involving a stereo and records from Oct 23.
Kenneth Vawter, 19, of 826 street NE, was charged Wednesday night with attempting to buy beer as a minor and unlawful use of a driver license. He pled guilty, appeared in municipal court, sentencing deferred to Jan 30, and was released on own recognizance after referral to the Citizens' Committee on Alcoholism.
At Kelley’s court appearance last Friday the court appointed Tom Koehler and Walter McNamara as his attorneys. McNamara withdrew and Fay was appointed. A replacement attorney was expected Thursday. Kelley pressed for a preliminary hearing on the murder charge, set for Jan 29 at 2 p.m.
Melvin A. King, 27, of Cedar Terrace trailer court, faced a charge of making a false report after his wife said he claimed he had been kidnapped. Detectives traced the tale to a hoax. King later admitted injuring himself with a razor. He was to appear in municipal court and was treated at St Luke's hospital for facial and arm wounds.
Warsaw based report says Witold Szpatowski led a gang convicted of forging driver's licenses and university diplomas. The ringleader was sentenced to four and a half years in prison. The gang sold about 500 diplomas for 208 dollars each and 100 licenses for 83 dollars each.

Leo Shafer 70 of 412 First Street SW died Wednesday after a long illness. A Cedar Rapids resident for 24 years he worked for the Rock Island railroad until his 1967 retirement. Born January 14 1900 in Greene he married Laura A Shonka July 4 1945 in Cedar Rapids. He served in World War II with the Navy and belonged to the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks Lodge 954. Surviving: wife two daughters a son a stepson 16 grandchildren eight great grand children three brothers and many relatives. Memorial services 1 pm Saturday at Chapel of Memories with Rev Donald Caspers. Burial Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call Cedar Memorial funeral home Friday afternoon and at the chapel Saturday after 10 am.
Lillian P Mokrejs widow of John Mokrejs died Thursday after a brief illness. Born June 15 1877 in Cedar Rapids she married in 1905 and lived in New York before moving to Los Angeles then Cedar Rapids in 1967. A Pratt Institute graduate she was connected with the Christian Science church in New York and Cedar Rapids with no immediate survivors. Memorial services set for Turner Chapel East at 10 30 a m Saturday by a former Reader of the First Church of Christ Scientist. Cremation will follow. friends may call the chapel.
Erwin Lussenhop 41 of 2100 Larry Drive NE owner of Janer International died in Iowa City on Wednesday after a brief illness Born January 25 1928 in Morton Minnesota he was married to Lois Kloss June 13 1953 and leaves two daughters Jane and Joyce a brother in California and parents in Morton. Services are Saturday at 1:30 PM at John Hoepner funeral home Redwood Falls Minnesota Burial will be in Redwood Falls A memorial service will be held at Zion Lutheran church Hiawatha of which he was a member on January 25 at 2 PM Friends may contribute to Lutheran Home Finding Society if they wish

Graveside services Saturday noon at Oak Hill cemetery officiated by Rev Gordon P. Roberts.
