GOP control opens 77th Iowa General Assembly in Des Moines
Republicans assumed a 29 21 Senate and 54 46 House edge marking the first GOP majority since Branstad 1983. Gov Branstad calls it a new era as opening day featured swearing in 150 members and pledge to pursue tax cuts and death penalty while Democrats vow fair tax distribution and tough budgets. Eastern Iowans led ceremonial pledges and prayers as leaders chart a 110 day session with early adjournment hopes.
