The Crescent Lodge No. 25 AF and AM installed its 1958 officers Monday night at the Masonic hall in Cedar Rapids. Kenneth H. McPhee became worshipful master, with James E. Two Cedar Rapids youths aged 16 and 15 were held in Aurora Illinois city jail on car theft charges. Detectives said they were arrested early Tuesday while driving a car taken from Handler's used car lot and attempting to siphon gasoline from a parked vehicle. The youths and their parents would be returning to Cedar Rapids on Wednesday.
A public hearing on petitions to expand the Solon community school district into southern Newport township is set for Feb 3 at 8 p.m. in Johnson County Courthouse. The hearing will be conducted jointly by Johnson and Linn county boards, as part of cross county district planning and merger efforts.

Mrs George Boylan, once of Cedar Rapids, died Monday in Pasadena California after a heart attack. Local notices note her previous ties to the area and describe a sudden fatal event leading to her passing in California.
The Supreme Court on Monday overturned lower court rulings that allowed the post office to ban issues of Sunshine and Health and Sun. The Air Force test launched a Boeing Bomarc ramjet guided missile Tuesday at Cape Canaveral. No range or accuracy figures were released. The Bomarc, a supersonic ground to air missile, has a stated range of more than 250 miles and will become operational.
In Lienz Austria twelve mountaineers and a skier were reported missing as weather stations warned constant avalanche danger. A search battled the snowslide threat with efforts to locate the missing skier believed buried. A second search party was deployed to pursue all thirteen missing individuals.

Soviet papers led with reaction to President Eisenhower's war budget, calling it a war budget. Pravda and Izvestia noted high military spending with taxes shifting burden to individuals while corporations pay less. British papers framed the budget as expected and pointed to U.S. military might and allies.
In a unanimous ruling Justice Brennan held that intrastate commuter fares cannot be raised solely because service runs at a loss. The ICC must reopen hearings and consider all intrastate revenue when setting fares for the Milwaukee Road and similar lines, not just commuter operations.
Alf M. Landon urged Secretary of State Dulles to resign saying his stance against a Russian summit risks disaster to mankind. Landon, former Kansas governor and 1936 GOP nominee, spoke to teachers from three southwest counties urging a new secretary of state and a tougher foreign policy.
President Eisenhower told Congress that the United Nations effectively curbed fighting in the Middle East by parties complying with General Assembly recommendations. He added U.N. action was stymied in Hungary as the Soviet Union refused to follow UN guidance, hindering freedom there.
In Linn County district court on Tuesday five defendants faced criminal charges. Raymond J. Kuriger 21 pled guilty to breaking and entering and received a concurrent 10 year sentence with his current term at Anamosa prison. Everette W. Brooks 44 of Marion pleaded guilty to a second offense drunk driving and received a $500 fine. Johnny Dougherty 22 of Cedar Rapids pled guilty to a false check charge and had a suspended six month jail term conditioned on restitution by January 18. A mother of two pled guilty to lewdness and await sentencing on January 17. Mrs. Ralph Huey of Bell Gardens California is accused of cohabiting with five men since visiting Cedar Rapids. Ray Morris of Chicago was given until January 17 to plead to a car theft charge after the vehicle stolen from Gerald Wall of Walker was found destroyed near Center Point.

Grafft with remainder to his siblings, and specifies future half interests for Leland Grafft and Lela Aikens’ children. The Corey will leaves personal effects to Stella McKimpson and the remainder to Gerald Corey, named executor.
Two suits filed Monday name Lloyd J Mills of Mills Chevrolet suing Erwin Price for 535 dollars 79 cents. Ernest W Kolesik seeks 190 dollars for car damage from Cedar Rapids City Lines and bus driver Harold Holloway. Collision occurred December 21 1956 involving a City Lines bus and Kolesik’s car driven by his son Wayne.
Marvin E. Pesek dropped a personal injury suit and $6,871.37 truck damage claim against Eugene Burrichter after a Dec 10 1956 collision in Cedar Rapids. Separately Trax Oil Company won $72.90 against F. S. Mitralsky Company over a check payment dispute.

Deputy County Treasurer Lloyd Curtis reports about 21,400 of Linn County's 45,000 registered cars had 1958 license plates by Tuesday. A 5 percent penalty or $1 minimum applies from February 1. Last week of January sees long lines in the courthouse lobby as owners rush to beat the January 31 nonpenalty deadline. Courthouse hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and noon Saturdays.

Cedar Rapids firemen responded to an out of city alarm in Worthington Acres. Fire Chief Jesse Hunter said the Hollands’ home on the Holland property suffered a bedroom closet fire of undetermined origin. Fire crews confined the damage to the bedroom. the Hollands agreed to pay the $100 service charge. Alarm reported by phone at 4 35 a.m.
Des Moines officials say the Iowa Federation of Labor AFL-CIO formally expelled the Teamsters Union after a national directive from the AFL-CIO convention. The move reduces the state federation’s membership to about 88,000 with Teamsters the third largest group.
An out-of-court settlement was reached Tuesday morning in a civil damage suit filed by Roy Stevens and Mabelle Stevens against Eugene Parsons of Iowa City. A jury had been empaneled Monday but was sent home after the settlement. the amount was not disclosed. The suit followed a car pedestrian collision at Capitol and Burlington streets in October 1956.
Moscow reports that Nikita Khrushchev is away from the capital for a rest and is expected to return soon. The foreign ministry said the Communist Party chief has not attended diplomatic receptions in Moscow for ten days.
