City budget plan would lay off C R workers in Cedar Rapids
Cedar Rapids City Council began shaping its next fiscal year budget with proposed layoffs of about 20 full time employees across streets, engineering, and parks while preserving police and fire. The draft would raise commercial property taxes about 10 percent and slightly cut residential taxes. Finance Commissioner Lyle Hanson warned the plan would require a 25 cent per thousand increase in the tax levy to avoid major cuts to police and fire. Streets Commissioner Don Thomas criticized the process as council members were asked to cut five percent to cover a 3.5 million shortfall. Public safety advocates urged protecting police and firefighters.
