The rising cost of money pressured stocks in quiet to moderately active trading. The UPI market barometer fell 0.99 percent with 1,014 declines and 364 advances as the Dow dropped to 923.05 amid mixed results in major issues and large block trades.
Dist. Judge Edward Haggerty refused to delay or relocate the January 21 trial of Clay Shaw on charges of conspiring to assassinate President John F. Kennedy. He denied motions to quash Garrison charges and to change venue outside New Orleans.
A strike of Associated Press personnel delayed transmission of some Monday market reports.
Chicago AP reports hogs sold 50 to 75 cents lower with 8 500 head traded. Prices ranged with 205-220 lb butchers at 20.25 to 20.75, 220-240 lb at 19.50 to 20.00, and 240-260 lb at 19.00 to 19.50. Sows and boars moved lower. cattle totals around 66 000 with steer yields and heifer prices noted across eastern and western cornbelt markets.
UPI reports a weak trade with demand steady to good only. Butchers prices drop by 50 to 75 cents, still under earlier levels. Receipts totaled 100000 for Monday with weekly and annual comparisons noted and cattle weight brackets listed across U.S. 1-4 grades for various hog and sow weights.
Sioux City buyers paid 25 to 27.50 for slaughter cattle and heifers with many lots around 26 to 27 dollars per hundredweight. Calves traded lightly at thin demand around 7 percent? of value. Slaughter steers and heifers showed weakness in spots with 1 050 pound heifers reported at 26.00 to 27.00 per cwt, prime offerings as high as 27.50.
Livestock prices from Omaha report 12 000 calves up to 400 head of steers and cows. Steers around 28 75 to 28 85 for 1 075 to 1 150 pound lots with high choice and prime ranges near 28 15 to 28 25. Cows and canners mostly 13 00 to 15 50 with some at 15 75 to 16 00.
C R Markets reported prices on the Cedar Rapids hog market Monday were 25 to 50 cents lower. Saturday's prices for country and plant delivered butchers weighing 200 to 230 pounds ranged from 18.75 to 19.25 dollars, with packers and sows showing declines by weight and grade across heavier categories.
Listed prices show western lambs at 25.00, native wooled and Sug lambs at 19.00 to 21.00, eggs 4c large and 30c medium, delivery offered. Poultry includes Hyline stock at 3c, heavy hens 4c, corn No 2 yellow shelled at 1.07, No 2 soybeans 2.48 per 38 lbs, oats noted, Monday's close delivered.
Total U S shipments 639 arrivals 80 track 113 demand for best lots moderate market slightly stronger. Track sales Idaho russet Bur banks 6 Minnesota North precerseds 7.65 3.00 Street of Burbanks and Minnesota round reds provide price references amid activity.
