In Defiance about 90 miles northwest of Des Moines residents support Gay- Tom Vilsack’s commutation of Dixie Shanahan Duty’s murder sentence. Duty, 39, may be paroled after 10 years. she was sentenced to 50 years for second degree murder for killing husband Scott Shanahan in 2002 and leaving his body for 14 months.
