Northeast Iowa writer recounts a strenuous hunting attempt with his dog Woody in Buchanan County snow. The trek through knee to waist deep drifts tests endurance as they push toward a late season pheasant sighting, with Woody guiding and the hunter slogging to the truck.
The rule, effective January 1, closes segments of the Cedar River in Cedar Rapids and other Iowa rivers to deliberate snagging. Marion Conover of the Fisheries Bureau says the areas protect game fish from illegal snagging. Snagging is using a hook to foul hook fish.
Poweshiek County boards host an ice fishing derby at Diamond Lake from 9 to 1 with $2 adult registration and youth free. Snowmobile drag races near Coggon start 11 with registration at 8:30. Wildlife in Winter talk at Marr Park Lodge 1 p.m. Saturday. Cross country ski basics January 20 at F W Kent Park, pre-register by January 17. Prairie plant propagation workshop January 23 and February 27 at Indian Creek Nature Center. Waterfowl nesting workshop January 27 at Indian Creek Nature Center. The Iowa boat and fishing show runs January 19 to 21 at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Falls and the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Admission is 3 dollars for adults at Hawkeye Downs with free entry for children 12 and under. early arrival offers and free parking. The Waterloo event features 25 marine dealers and shows 2001 boat models with sessions by Steve Hoffman Tommy Skarks and Bassmasters members.
The Hawkeye Fly Fishing Association will hold its annual meeting February 9 to 11 at Adventureland Inn in Altoona. Jene Hughes will recount his thousand mile four day Iowa trout streams survey on February 9. Jay and Kathy Buchner and Bill Sherer will lead seminars February 10 and 11. Registration is ten dollars per day.
