A four year old Marion girl, Casey Wallace, died Friday afternoon in a two car crash on Mount Vernon Road SE. Ronald Wallace, 36, of Marion, the father and driver of the eastbound car, swerved out of control crossing the center line and hit a westbound car driven by Curt Wheeler, 22, of Cedar Rapids. Ronald Wallace was hospitalized for observation in fair condition. Wheeler was treated and released. The incident remains under investigation.
A 14 month old girl, Elizabeth Marie Slocum, died from smoke inhalation after a fire at 2726 Westwood Drive NW in Cedar Rapids. Her 4-year-old brother reportedly ignited material in the laundry room with a cigarette lighter. Neighbor Chevy Then helped evacuate others and alerted 911 as flames spread. The incident remains under investigation by the Linn County Medical Examiner.
