Harlem minister accuses Johnson of cowardice over Powell case
Rev. A Kendall Smith of Harlem Citizens for Community Action says President Johnson showed cowardice in the Powell affair. He announces round the clock picketing of the White House and Capitol and national headquarters to support Powell amid travel fund allegations and contempt conviction. Smith warns of coordinated demonstrations by Harlem and other supporters and cites political motives by conservatives and some Democrats and Republicans. He stresses nonviolence as a Christian but warns action could follow Watts-like violence.
