Government grain storage profits cited by senators
Sen. Stuart Symington said warehousemen storing government surplus grains report the highest profits in 30 years. Iowa economists testified two firms, Newhall Grain Co. and Archer cooperative elevator, earned about 52 to 63 percent when measured against cost including shrinkage and deterioration. If shrinkage costs are added, profits drop to about 63 percent, while distortion gains rise to 71 and 77 percent against cost alone.

Duane Schlatter, 19, of Marion, received bench parole from an eight year reformatory sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter before Judge Charles Penningroth. He was fined 100 dollars in a case arising from the Sept. 9 collision on Highway 151 near Marion that killed Lee Ray Toom, 30, Cedar Rapids. Schlatter had pleaded innocent at his Sept. 26 arraignment. trial had been set but postponed at defense request.

A crest of 15 feet was expected Tuesday night. Des Moines River at Ottumwa rose 4.3 feet to 5.9 feet, with a crest 6 to 8 feet anticipated by Thursday. Cedar River at Cedar Rapids could rise 1 to 2 feet in 24 hours, with rain possibly producing additional rises. Highways were wet. fog and ice made northern Iowa travel hazardous.
