Chicago AP report notes estimated salable livestock receipts for Wednesday: 10,000 hogs, 14,000 cattle, 3,500 sheep. Hogs fell Tuesday as total receipts reached 17,000, the largest Tuesday count in about a year, with arrivals 6,000 above estimates.
Salable hogs receipts 17 000 with fair activity, butchers uneven and prices down 25 to 50 cents per cwt. Choice weights 180 to 230 pounds quoted 25.25 to 26.00. Cattle receipts 10 000 with calves 600, steady to slower demand. steers mostly steady, heifers down up to 25 cents, cows steady, bulls down 50 cents. Prime steers 1 100 to 1 300 pounds pass at 27.50 to 29.50, other steers 25.00 to 26.25, cows 10.75 to 13.00. Sheep receipts 3 500, lambs strong, woolly lambs around 105 pounds trading near 20.75 per cwt with gains of 19.50 to 20.75 noted.
Des Moines market receipts show 55 000 for the week, 41 000 last week, and 74 000 year ago with Monday actuals at 100 000. Trading range 25 to 75 cents lower with instances of 100 off on butchers over 270 and sows over 330. Prices for various weight bands listed with top boars and bar at 21.0, hog weights 24.25 to 25.15, sows 21.25 to 22.00, and mixed cattle weights around 20 to 25.75 per 100 pounds depending on class and load.
Receipts of 13 500 calves with a large share fed steers and heifers, high good and choice grades predominating. Trade moderately active on steers and heifers, generally steady. cows mostly steady, bulls stronger. Dealers, stockers and feeders fully steady. Prices include two loads high prime steers around 1256 to 1325 lb at 28.50, few loads choice steers to prime 25.50, masorte choice 22.00 to 25.00, low choice 19.00 to 21.75, choice heifers 23.50, good to low choice 17.00 to 20.50, utility and commercial cows 10.75 to 13.50, utility and commercial bulls 12.50 to 15.00, individual heavy bulls up to 15.50 with top 25.00, load choice feeders around 21.50.
Cattle receipts reach 8000 with calves 600. steer and heifer prices steady as spots ease. Average good to average fed steers range from 20.00 to 24.25 with small lots at 24.50 to 25.00 for high choice. Mixed yearlings sell around 24.00 to 24.25, with high good and choice heifers and mixed yearlings at 19.50 to 23.50. Dealers hold prices steady, prime scarce with a few around 24.
Sioux City market report shows receipts 7 000 cattle and 100 calves. Slaughter steers steady with early rounds stronger. Heifer trade up 1.90 over two days. Choice fed steers 22 50 to 25 50 with prime up to 27 50. Choice heifers 19 00 to 22 50.

In Keokuk seven persons were overcome by gas in an apartment building on Tuesday. The group included Mr. and Mrs. John Gentzkow, Mrs. Vivian Carlson and her daughter Mary Ann, Frances Tallerico, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hartch who lived above the Tallerico grocery. They were all reported in fair condition. The origin of the escaping gas was not determined immediately.
Three Columbus men died when their plane crashed on a Knightstown area farm on Tuesday. The AP report notes the victims were from Columbus and the crash occurred in a rural field, with authorities investigating the casualties.
DES MOINES The new lieutenant for the Eastern Iowa highway patrol will reside in Iowa City rather than Cedar Rapids as officials cited central location among 22 counties. The post will be filled from 14 eligible sergeants after a rating board in Des Moines. Ced ar Rapids offices remain, with Cedar Rapids headquarters moving soon to new quarters in the First Trust building amid parking and space issues. A Municipal Airport terminal project is eyed for the new site, with move delayed until suitable space is found.
Firefighters battled a blaze Tuesday at the Orville Roderick farm six miles east of Waukon. The fire started between the wall and chimney. Moderate structural damage was reported, but smoke and water damage were extensive.
Chicago AP reports grains drifted lower as cash offerings by the country rose for corn and soybeans, easing some commodities. Wheat closed slightly lower, corn slipped to 2 dollars and something, oats fell modestly, rye eased, soybeans dipped, lard declined.
Chicago cash wheat and corn prices listed with No. 1 yellow at 1.56 to 1.58 and 1.52 to 1.56 respectively. Oats and soybeans shown as none or nominal. Barley quoted around 1.30 to 1.62 with field seed prices for white clover red top alsike timothy and red clover also provided.

AMES INL The State Highway Commission announced the appointment of Fred Schneider as location engineer for the commission. Schneider has worked with the commission since 1918 and has been chief road designer. He is a graduate of Iowa State College.
An Iowa audit of Coralville covering 1952 to 1953 urges deposits with the town treasurer in the same month, bans self interests in contracts by officers, and shifts town attorney pay to a regular fee basis. Two council members were named in alleged indirect contracting.
Ten Eastern Iowans enlisted across four branches, announced by recruiting stations and the naval reserve. Marine recruits sworn in at Des Moines include Glenn R. Suits of Vinton and Edmond L. Van Orsdale, both 17 and 18 respectively. Army enlistees are Rodney E. Ellis 19 and Paul Stockberger 20 from Des Moines and Anamosa. Russell D. Boyer 19 joins the Air Force in Iowa City. Naval Reserve enlistees are Robert F. Sirowy 19 from Des Moines, Harold L. Ransier Marion route 3, and William P. Hotle Marion route 1. The reserve also re-enlisted Henry Hernandez 519 C Avenue NE, a Korean War veteran, and Duane Calvert of Anamosa.
Lawrence Burgh, 72, of 201 Twenty-second Street SW, awoke to find his money and clothing stolen after sharing a room with a man who identified as Robert Leece of Lexington Kentucky. Burgh alerted police after discovering his $40 billfold, jacket, trousers, and shirt gone while Leece had checked out.

DES MOINES Iowa The Iowa State Commerce Commission re elected its chairman David Long and veteran secretary George McCaughan on Tuesday in a two to one vote. Commissioner John Ropes nominated Barbara Hesley for secretary but Long and Reed opposed him. Hesley had 50 letters of support and backing from the Iowa Council of Republican Women. Ropes has dissented from other commissioners and opposed McCaughan.
Ronald Baum of Independence was elected president of the Iowa Retail Clothing Association. Harold Readquist of Iowa City was named vice president, with other officers to follow.
Bessie Nielsen was installed as noble grand of Grove City Rebekah Lodge No 35 in the IOOF hall Monday evening. Delores Shimerda and Star of Maine Rebekah staff conducted the ceremony. New officers include Lulu Luse as vice grand Shirley Roupe recording secretary Ella Harding financial secretary Lillian Albaugh treasurer Amelia Murphey degree captain. Cpl Bob Williams and Mrs Williams arrive from Fort Bragg North Carolina to spend a month’s furlough with relatives Mrs Paul Brannaman of Marion and Mr and Mrs Fred Miller of Parnell. Williams has re enlisted for six years and will return after furlough to the 82nd Airborne division.
Central City rural letter carrier Edward Ferreter who has been ill with pneumonia for a week in a Cedar Rapids hospital returned to his home Tuesday. Ferreter is a former city letter carrier in Marion.

District Judge Ralph Crary denied a motion to dismiss conspiracy indictments against former city councilman Nicholas O Mileauk and Fruit Broker Mark Sabel in Sioux City. The ruling keeps the charges active as the case proceeds toward trial.
A Charlotte attorney testified before the Subversive Activities Control Board that he served as a volunteer undercover FBI agent in the Communist party from 1948 to 1953. Ralph Clayton Clontz Jr. said he was tutored by Junius Scales, learned Marxism, joined in 1950, and attended the Jefferson School of Science in New York under an alias with Scales’s help. He reported Communist activities to the FBI and described the enrollment as a front operation in a bid to expose party activity.
Sioux City authorities report eight year old Gerald Berg died after his 13 year old brother Donald and nine year old James played with a loaded shotgun. The coroner ruled the death accidental noting Gerald struck the gun with a bow causing the firearm to discharge.
The Iowa supreme court ruled the merger of three rural districts with Gowrie consolidated district illegal. The decision, upholding District Judge Heiserman, found the merger under the wrong code section and cited prior consolidation rulings. Scott Byers age 3 of 11 Blake Court SE suffered a lacerated nose Monday afternoon when the car his mother was driving collided with another vehicle at Avenue NE and Sixteenth Street NE.
