Inmates at Sing Sing prison released 17 guards after a 53 hour siege ending around 12:45 a.m. EST. State Corrections Commissioner Thomas Coughlin said no amnesty was granted though inmates claimed officials agreed to several demands on mail packages recreation and visiting space.
Police said no suspects in custody after the shotgun slaying of Al Davidson 41 a Waterloo assistant Black Hawk County defender. He was shot in the face outside a downtown apartment complex as he was getting from his vehicle. Witnesses described a tall masked suspect, possibly in a tan or white van. Davidson had a prior shooting incident last summer and was to testify in court. He helped in the James Taylor murder trial and had deep ties to the county public defender’s office.
The 8th Circuit voided Anthony Erthel Williams 1968 first degree murder conviction for the Urbandale girl murder, citing bad faith police conduct. State officials plan to appeal. Williams, in Fort Madison prison, faces a possible third trial or release. Civil liberties critique drew comments from Polk County Attorney Dan Johnston.

Marion City Council member Patrick Grady and Mark D. Evans were arrested at 2 am after laundromat owners reported phony dollar bills. Police found 123 counterfeit notes and 189 quarters, with 120 bills sharing a serial number with a genuine dollar. Grady and Evans were released on summons. Secret Service may pursue stronger charges.
