Emergency shelter opened at Cedar Rapids school during winter weather
The Grant Wood American Red Cross opened an emergency shelter at Hayes School in Cedar Rapids Sunday for stranded motorists and residents with heating problems. Disaster director Tim Burke said the shelter, able to house up to 200, had only five visitors by 9 p.m. A pair from Madison, Wis., en route from Idaho, and a student from Prairie du Chien, were among those seeking warmth and meals. Local police directed others to the shelter, where hot soup and coffee, along with cots and blankets, were provided. The university helicopter at the Iowa City hospital was also in Cedar Rapids for refueling but grounded by weather.
