Key Paragraphs in Report By Committee on Smoking
Highlights from the surgeon general advisory committee on smoking and health note smoking as a major health hazard. Cigarette use greatly raises lung cancer risk for men and women, with nine to tenfold and higher risks for heavy male smokers. Pipe and cigar smoking also raise cancer risks but less than cigarettes. Smoking is linked to lip and laryngeal cancers and to lower birth weights in babies born to smoking mothers. Pulmonary emphysema shows association but not proven causality. Death rates rise with cigarette quantity, roughly 40 to 120 percent higher than non smokers across defined daily ranges.
