Canal Zone Gas Repulse Mob by Gas

U S troops used tear gas at Colon to push back a Panamanian mob of about 300 throwing stones toward the Canal Zone. The crowd burned a Panama railroad switch house and 25 feet of cross ties. A Panamanian policeman was injured. The disturbances lasted nearly four hours amid strong diplomatic efforts and a move to calm tensions after Panama broke relations with the United States.

Woman Slain at Marengo. Woodrum Charged with Murder

George Thomas Woodrum, 25, of Marengo was charged with first degree murder in connection with the shotgun slaying of Judy Rawson, 25, as details show an argument with her estranged husband Cedar Rapids man Larry Rawson preceded the shooting. Bond set at 50,000 and the hearing paused until Wednesday at 9 a.m. Woodrum was returned to the county jail after his arrest in Grinnell.

Texas Securities Man Faces Bankrupt Futures and Arrest Warrant

Paul Sandblom of Corpus Christi filed voluntary bankruptcy as ten creditors claim over 5 million due and total indebtedness above 20 million from discontinued mortgages and notes. U S Commissioner James Martin issued a warrant for his arrest for selling securities by mail without proper SEC registration. Authorities seek his whereabouts while Sandblom’s attorney notes he may return.

Smoking is linked to lip and laryngeal cancers and to lower birth weights in babies born to smoking mothers. Pulmonary emphysema shows association but not proven causality. Peace Corps Doctor recounts Panama mob escape in Santiago

Dr. Robert Waldron a 28 year old Peace Corps physician told the Rockford Morning Star by phone of his escape from a Panamanian mob in Santiago about 200 miles from Panama City. He described a thousand to two thousand rioters storming the hotel and his hiding place before being whisked to safety by local police. He was airlifted to the U.S. zone with his wife Patricia and their 16 month old son Richard. The account follows his reunion at Albrook air base and remarks on tensions after two deaths and claims of cold blooded shootings.
