Linn county grand jury indicts Harold Cooper head of the state liquor control commission for permitting J LeRoy Farmer of Cedar Rapids to possess liquor citing a letter with 200 state seals. Comments on politics, NRA codes, and gold standard debates follow including Justice Court views and former Senator Smith W Brookhart’s removal from the federal payroll.
Chairman Harold M Cooper of the Town liquor control commission was indicted on liquor control act violations after a grand jury found he aided J LeRoy Farmer in illegally possessing liquor. The case involves 200 state liquor seals linked to a raid on Farmers canning factory, with Farmer charged separately. Cooper posts bond and plans to plead not guilty, asserting exoneration will come in court.
A Des Moines conference of Democratic leaders adjourned without a decision on Harold M. Cooper, Iowa liquor commission chairman indicted for liquor act violations. Gov Clyde Herring said a ruling would come Friday. Cooper faces charges of knowledge of illegal liquor possession by J LeRoy Farmer of Cedar Rapids. Cooper appeared at the session as Lieut. Gov Nels Kraschel and Democratic Chairman Eugene Feuling participated. The governor said he cannot force Cooper to resign and that current statutes do not authorize suspension.
The Iowa state planning board may provide a Civilian Conservation Corps unit for Cedar Rapids city parks. If approved, the city would only supply a camp location, with Van Vechten or another park a possible site. Cedar Rapids officials discussed the plan as part of a broader move to set CCC units in several metropolitan areas.
Washington AP The American Liberty League reported receipts of 104830 and expenditures of 95062 in its efforts to preserve the Constitution. Du Ponts of Delaware gave 15100 to the league and its Delaware branch. Jolette Shouse, president, said the group is not a party yet pursues political goals while aiming to appeal to both parties. Shouse also disclosed 12000 for salaries and 6000 for travel from Aug 15 to Dec 31. The report lists 9000 contributions to the Crusaders, urging repeal of Prohibition, whose officers have been critical of the Roosevelt administration.
President Roosevelt and congressional leaders reached a plan to provide 4 billion dollars in a lump sum for a new work relief program to be administered by the President. Congress to specify spending of the regular 300 million annual public works allocation.
Reports from New Orleans and Baton Rouge allege Governor O K Allen resigned. No confirmation due to his disappearance and Senate leader Wingate's illness. The secretary of state had not received the resignation, but word said it had been sent to Huey P Long in Washington.
Rumors in Louisiana that Gov. O K Allen resigned were traced to another Allen who left a committee setup to arrange a deal between Standard Oil of Louisiana employees and officers in the dispute over the new state oil tax.

Kresge and other magnates were disclosed in securities reports as holding large stock. Du Ponts were revealed as major contributors to the American Liberty League. Supreme Court hearings on the Gold case continued into day three. Connally and Disney oil control bill revived to address hot oil objections. Foreign affairs fears arose over tin storage being seen as a belligerent move.
Mary Pickford obtained an interlocutory decree of divorce from Douglas Fairbanks Jr in a brief Los Angeles hearing. Judge Ben B Lindsey granted the divorce on Miss Pickford’s Dec 8 1932 suit alleging mental cruelty and neglect.
Two nattily dressed men robbed the Farmers Savings bank at Leighton Iowa about 1700. Cashier Vander Linden and Assistant Groenendyk were present as the vault was opened. The men fled, leaving two license plates 00 1207 and a silk scarf found later near Oskaloosa by local officials.
In St Moritz, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. told reporters he had nothing to say about Mary Pickford’s Los Angeles divorce filing. He appeared unsettled by the late call, saying only he had nothing to say. Lady Sylvia Ashley was also staying at the Palace hotel as Fairbanks’ London-connected divorce case colleague.
The Canadian luxury liner Empress of Britain sailed on her annual world cruise with 500 passengers booked to pay about $1,750,000 for the 130 day voyage. One woman passenger in a $15,000 suite will pay roughly $114 daily.
