Rural shelter funding aids hidden population in Iowa City
City and county leaders plus local groups contributed to a temporary shelter at 1534 S Gilbert St after extreme cold and snow. The Aldi building offers reduced rent with over 45000 in support from public and private sources, opening with seven residents and aiming for 20 to 25. Cedar Rapids shelters report steady demand and a centralized bed system, while students from Alburnett High School donated a warm meal to Willis Dady shelter clients.
