The U S Defense Department ordered 27 500 undercoveralls at about 20 dollars each made from charcoal to protect airmen from cold poison gas germs and radioactive fallout. Federal and state officers investigate a major counterfeiting ring believed active in Eastern Iowa for months. Two Keokuk women, Christina Anderson and Karin Carruthers, were arrested and charged with uttering forged instruments and conspiracy. Warrants issued for four others. printing press seized in Johnson County raid used to print bogus checks and IDs. May involve Cedar Rapids, Keokuk and possible out of state cashed checks.
Michael Kahler 28 of 911 13th St SE treated for a hand laceration after a man jumped from a car and threatened to kill him in the 300 block of Third Avenue SE. Kahler deflected a knife, escaped, no arrests. Also reported: mixed grain prices at Cedar Rapids market with soybeans up and corn firm, and cattle market notes from Des Moines indicating steady undertone amid light trading.
Volkswagen will recall 383,000 cars worldwide to install an extra safety device in the steering mechanism. The recall covers Golf Rabbit and Scirocco models built between August 1974 and May 1975, following a West German ADAC report finding defects in some units.
