Cyanide Blamed For Cedar River Fish Kill
Cedar Falls authorities announce cyanide was definitely responsible for a major Cedar River fish kill earlier this week. Public health engineer R J Schliekelman says the toxin likely came from an industrial or commercial plant via the sewage treatment system and will prompt further investigations. State Health and Conservation officials toured the site Wednesday. many fish were under ice or recovered as cyanide dissipated. The river was reported largely cleared by Thursday, with past cyanide incidents in 1949 and 1951 noted.
