President elect Donald Trump tweets a claim that GM ships Mexican built Cruze models tax free to U.S. dealers. GM counters that only a small percentage are sold in the United States and that all U.S. Cruze sedans are built domestically.
Avasive Palmer amaranth, spread through conservation seed mixes for pollinators, has expanded from five to 49 Iowa counties in 2016. ISU agronomy expert Bob Hartzler notes the weed competes with corn and soybeans and now threatens much of the state.

Iowa's 87th General Assembly opens with 29 Republicans and 20 Democrats in the 50 member Senate. Republicans hold the governorship and majorities in both chambers after the Nov 8 election. One senator switched to independent. a 150th seat will be added after a Davenport special election. Participating first-time members are sworn in this week.
The session highlights include Rep. Skyler Wheeler of Orange City as the youngest member and Rep. Clel Baudler of Greenfield as the oldest, reflecting a wide age range within the body.
Rep Clel Bandler notes women hold a minority share in the Senate with five Democrats among them Amy Sinclair the sole Republican woman. In the House five minority members are all African American Democrats. Minorities total 13 percent of Iowa's population yet 3 percent of the Legislature. Farmers are fewer while business professionals are the largest group with 66 members or 44 percent.
