Waterloo students at Columbus High School collected more than 210000 cans to win the national Del Monte Do Something Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive Challenge. Nationally 50000 students from 96 schools donated 1.63 million cans for America's Second Harvest and local agencies.
Two drivers were hospitalized after a Monday morning collision on the Bremer County line near Sumner. Joshua Quail 23 of Waucoma fell asleep, his pickup crossing the center line and hitting Marlys Faber 65 of Sumner head on. Faber was airlifted to Covenant Medical Center while Quail was moved to Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo in satisfactory condition.
Ramale Hunt of Waterloo, 22, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for first degree murder in the 2004 shooting outside a night club that killed 20 year old Robert Robinson. Hunt, 19 at the time, fatally shot Robinson after an alleged punch near closing time.

Fire deaths across Eastern Iowa numbered 19 last year down from 21 in 2005 and 28 in 2004 and 19 in 2003. Linn County had one death, Johnson County two, with Scott, Des Moines, and other counties reporting multiple fatalities.

A mother left the running van outside her Marshalltown home at 5 20 pm Saturday. The vehicle was recovered about 50 minutes later, about 1 1/2 miles away, with the toddler unharmed inside. Police believe the thief did not know the child was aboard.
Des Moines authorities say DNA from suspect Jody McCullah, 38, matches the 1995 rape of a 13 year old girl in Des Moines. McCullah is charged with first degree kidnapping and sexual assault. the kidnapping charge carries a life term. Investigators will re interview the victim and friends from that night.
