Carter laid to rest in Washington after state funeral rites
Nearly 44 years after leaving Washington in defeat, former President Jimmy Carter returned for three days of state funeral rites. His casket traveled from Atlanta to Joint Base Andrews and to the Capitol as lawmakers and leaders paid respects. A bipartisan delegation attended, including Vice President Harris, Cabinet members, and three Supreme Court justices, with eulogies praising his faith and Habitat for Humanity work. Carter died December 29 at age 100.
