Rabbit hole diagnosis costs and fair refunds in car repair
A 2005 Mercury Sable with starting issues was diagnosed as a slow current draw from the instrument panel by an ASE shop, leading to an $800 refurbed panel and a $120 diagnostic fee. A Ford dealer later found a faulty starter, replaced it, and the car now starts reliably. the first shop is urged to refund part of the diagnostic fee as fair customer service.
