In Rockford Illinois 46 year old Simon Nelson was charged after police found six of his children aged 3 to 12 fatally harmed at their home with a hunting knife and rubber headed mallet. Milwaukee police alerted Rockford officers who found the grisly scene on a 2 1/2 story stucco house. Autopsies indicated the children were attacked with a sharp instrument and beaten while asleep. Nelson was arrested in Milwaukee on a separate assault charge against his wife Ann Nelson.

In dense fog on Highway 20 near Jesup a car driven by Gary Gilson collided with a Williamsburg school bus carrying 25 wrestlers and staff. Gilson and his daughter Heather, 16, died along with the bus driver Glenn Goben, 39. The crash ripped the car under the bus front end and collapsed the axle as the bus veered toward a ditch two miles from Jesup High School.
Dr Edward Renner of the State Hygienic Laboratory in Iowa City said a recent death of a female patient is probably due to Legionnaires disease. At least four other suspected cases remain under investigation and have been reported to the CDC in Atlanta. The dead patient showed antibodies linked to the illness.
